Hiking tours and excursions with public transport


The Destination German Wine Route is not only convenient to reach by train, but the well-developed local public transport system is also ideal for excursions and activities - whether it's winery hopping, a visit to the zoo, a stop for refreshments, a bike ride through the vineyards or a hike in the Palatinate Forest.

Leisure and hiking buses

503 Kalmit Express
From May to October, there is a hiking bus service from Neustadt main station to Kalmit on Sundays and public holidays. The journey takes about 35 minutes. The Kalmitexpress runs from Neustadt via Maikammer & St. Martin directly to the highest elevation of the Palatinate Forest, the Kalmit.

506 Edenkoben - Forsthaus Heldenstein
Line 506 runs along a variety of excursion destinations through the valley of Edenkoben. On the way, it passes leisure and hiking destinations such as Villa Ludwigshöhe, the summer residence of Bavarian King Ludwig I, or the Heldenstein forester's lodge. Via Weyher and Rhodt, the circular route leads back to Edenkoben station.

517 Neustadt/Wstr - Johanniskreuz
Line 517 runs from the German Wine Route via Lambrecht/Pfalz, through the Elmstein Valley directly into the Palatinate Forest to Johanniskreuz. Here you can learn important aspects about the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen and go on hiking tours into the heart of the Palatinate Forest at the House of Sustainability.

Linie 527 - Trifelsbus
Line 527 runs every hour from May to October on Sundays and public holidays and every 2 hours on Saturdays. During the week, additional trips are available by appointment for hiking groups and school classes. It leads from Annweiler up to Trifels Castle. This is where the imperial jewels were kept and the English King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned.

Linie 531 - Wild- und Wanderpark Silz
The Game and Hiking Park can be reached by bus every hour on weekdays, Sundays and holidays from Landau and Annweiler with line 531. On Saturdays, line 531 runs every two hours.

Linie 521 - Forsthaus Taubensuhl und Waldlehrpfad
The forest nature trail starts at the Taubensuhl forester's lodge. A large board at the edge of a clearing marks the beginning of the 3 km long circular trail, which is ideally suited for children. Line 521 runs every two hours from Landau on Sundays and public holidays between 1 May and 31 October.

Excursion trains

Kuckucksbähnel - Historic steam railway
Neustadt/Wstr. - Lambrecht (Pfalz) - Elmstein

From May to the end of October, the historic Kuckucksbähnel takes its passengers directly from Neustadt/Wstr. to the Elmstein Valley - in the middle of the Palatinate Forest. Nostalgic charm guaranteed!

The Wine Route-Express and Alsace-Express train pairs run between Koblenz and Mainz and Wissembourg on the German-French border.

The Bundenthaler
The Bundenthaler excursion train travels through the Palatinate from Mannheim main station via Ludwigshafen, Neustadt/Weinstraße and Landau through the Queichtal valley without changing trains directly to Dahner Felsenland, where it serves all stations.
